Kona Brewing Co. launched a national experiential marketing tour in 3 regions of the US – and all three units had to be identically functional.

Crisp, Hawaiian beer evokes surfer vibes and emotions and what better vehicle to express that than a VW Bus, the iconic 60’s van? Well – the electric, modern replica version of it of course so the unit more easily moves across event- and tradeshow floors and requires virtually no maintenance.

Furthermore, as they needed three of them to deploy simultaneously across different markets, so while vintage units are super iconic and we also do genuine VW vintage restorations, that would have been a special kind of hard challenge to scale.

The solution was a fleet of custom-fabricated, VW-inspired electric draft carts.

The VW Bus-styled golf cart is a highly mobile, instantly recognizable asset that radiates Kona’s island lifestyle brand identity.

While the equipment itself is minimal – after all, what do you need to keep beer cold? An ice well for crushed ice to hold beers and fridges to hold yet more beer. That’s about it.

The flex of this project is in the fine detail carpentry-craftsmanship that went into those nice real wood countertops and the custom backlit client rail and letterboard on the opening awning.

The units also feature a custom half-wrap with the iconic Kona Big Wave branding, perfectly color-matched to the custom surfboards mounted on the roof.

The Kona Big Wave fleet successfully handled the multi-location beverage sampling brand activation.

By deploying three identical electric units, the agency was able to exponentially increase Kona’s brand footprint at major events, seamlessly moving the carts through crowds where standard food trucks could never go.

The fleet delivered exactly what major brands demand: high-volume service, zero-emission operation, and a flawless, photogenic aesthetic that drives engagement.
